Roselle Park Ada Michigan Grand River Natural Habitat Refuge

Roselle Park Ada Michigan Grand River Natural Habitat Refuge

Roselle Park in Ada Michigan along the Grand River is  247 acre park

that is a dedicated Natural Habitat Refuge.  On a rainy Saturday a few weeks

ago, we stopped and took  a few photos.  It was cold and windy but

the fall colors were great.  We walked on one of the trails along the Grand

River. A very peaceful place to visit. Dogs on leashes are welcome.

Autumn on the Thornapple River Grand Rapids Michigan

Autumn is a picturesque time of year here in West Michigan. We

have lots of rivers, lakes, fall color, and lots of wildlife.  This series

of photos lets you see a few residents of the Thornapple River at

their daily routine.  The Thornapple River flows into the Grand River,

the longest in the state at Ada Michigan.  Needless to say, a haven for wildlife year round.  This gaggle of geese was just off the

Thornapple Pointe Golf Club  in southeastern Kent County a few

weekends ago.

Nature has so many lessons to teach us.

We don’t always pay attention to what she is saying but when

we do….we have a chance to share a moment of clarity and

wisdom.  On our excursion through the Grand Rapids area

yesterday, we encountered this maple tree.  How many

times have we sped past and not noticed it? Hundreds, probably.

Why did we notice it yesterday?

It shone out its brilliant yellow light on a rainy day, saying:

Look at me!  In a few days my golden leaves will be on the ground,

so notice me today….right now! maple in fall Grand river Dr

We did. We stopped to take a photo and share it with you.  Each day

we have the opportunity to notice and appreciate the beauty around us.

Do You Observe the Small Things in Life??

Do You Observe the Small Things in Life??

We are so busy and distracted in our lives, we often walk right

by things that are interesting or novel.  It just takes a moment

to notice and  it can certainly change your outlook and

maybe make you smile.  We were in a store shopping for hardware

the other day.  It was a cold, windy day and we were backing

out of our parking spot, when we noticed two little ones that

had found a warm, safe place to sit for a few moments.

Red SUV parked

The close up below shows them much better.

Were the tires warm?

Are they looking for food ?

We don’t know the answers but it gave us a little different perspective

on the day.

We were inside a nice warm car with a nice warm lunch we had just

finished.  These little sparrows were happy to find a temporary shelter

hoping to glean a crumb or two from people coming and going in the

parking lot.

Fall Maple refl water

This was captured yesterday playing golf at Thornapple Pointe Golf Course

on the Thornapple River in Grand Rapids Michigan.

My friend, Paul, and I got in a quick 18 holes in the afternoon.

The golf course was pretty open which left me time to snap a few shots

of our local scenery.   This little maple is putting on quite a show!

Day Trip to Grand Haven Michigan Pier

On a beautiful day in April, we went on a day road trip

to Grand Haven Michigan, which is about 30 miles from

Grand RapidsGrand Haven is on Lake Michigan, it has a

great beach.  If you won’t take my word for it,  it was

named one of the Top 5 Beaches in the United States by

Good Morning America-Travel Mom and has hosted the AVP

Pro Beach Volleyball Tournament throughout the summer

months,  due to the quality of its sand beaches.

It also has 2 lighthouses, connected by a lighted catwalk

which runs along the pier to the shore.  Grand Haven is a

Great Lakes port, home to a large charter fishing fleet, the

US Coast Guard Lake Michigan Group, which coordinates all

Lake Michigan Coast Guard activities.  In fact, Grand Haven

is officially nicknamed, Coast Guard City USA.

Grand Haven State Park is also a popular destination for tourists,

because it is on fabulous Lake Michigan.  We are so fortunate to

live so close to a natural wonder, Lake Michigan, one of the

largest fresh water lakes in the world.  On a balmy day in

April, it is so serene.  The same scene in stormy November

or January can look totally different.  We get warnings on our

weather channels about wave heights and swimming in

dangerous rip tide conditions all summer.

But on a day trip to Grand Haven in April, all we have to

concern ourselves with was lunch.  Which we had on the channel

at the Snug Harbor Restaurant while we watched the boats

going up and down the channel out to the big lake.

Grand Haven has lots to offer, whether you come for a vacation,

the Annual US Coast Guard Festival, or just a day tripper, like us.

Local Kentwood Golfer Plays at 2009 Buick Open

We all love a success story.  This one is about a local Kentwood

graduate, Matthew Harmon, who was Michigan’s Mr Golf 2002-3,

went on to play golf for Michigan State University

and is now on the Nationwide and NGA Hooters Golf Tours trying

to make  it to the PGA Tour.  He got a big break this week.

Let us tell you his story:

He was 2 under par playing his final qualifying round for the Buick

Open when his caddy (and brother-in-law) Nick, stepped into a

bunker and then raked his tracks.  Matt was in the other end of

the bunker hitting out and didn’t see what Nick did until it was

too late.  He thought it was a 2 stroke penalty.  He consulted the

officials. They didn’t know for sure either, but to be on the safe side,

assessed  the 2 stroke penalty, which put Matt at 4 under and

1 stroke over qualifying for the final  Buick Open.

Oh, well, another day of golf, and on to Houston, Texas  to play in

another tournament.  He was at the Minneapolis airport when he

got the call from the officials at the Buick Open.  They had received

a play cancellation and because of the penalty Matt assessed himself

(which is still in contention), they offered him a spot in the Open.

Now all he had to do was get back to Grand Blanc and get his

clubs and equipment there – which were on their way to Houston

by this time.  He got a ticket back to Grand Rapids and drove to

Grand Blanc, and his clubs and gear arrived in time, somehow.

He is performing like a champion at this tournament.  He was 4 under

yesterday and had the daily record for the longest drives.  He is 2 under

today, tied for 18th place.  This could be his very first major tournament

to place in the money.  Our local TV channel had an interview that aired

on the 11:00 pm newscast last night.  We are watching closely, this

could be his big break into the PGA events.

A few pictures I took yesterday of Matt and that other guy,  Tiger Woods

playing at Warwick Hills, The final Buick Open.

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mnGaCBLoiEc&hl=en&fs=1&rel=0]

Did I mention I used to play with Matt and his Dad when he first started

to play golf?  He must have been 10-11 years old.  He could hit the ball

a long way even back then.  I never dreamed he would one day play on

the PGA Tour and I would be in the crowd cheering him on!

Playing L. E. Kaufman Golf Course in Grand Rapids Michigan ~ June 2009

Kent County Michigan Amateur Golf Championship Tournament

here on July 11th & 12th 2009

This is the kind of real estate I prefer to all others, especially on

the weekend.  No hassles, just blue sky, green grass, and an

18 hole challenge.

I didn’t play particularly well today, but the course was in good shape, and

I had 3 new friends to share the morning round.

I took a few pictures so you can see a sampling of what this course looks like.

It is hard to believe to you are about 10-15 minutes away from downtown

Grand Rapids.

Discover West Michigan ~ A Small Museum Tour

Tri-River Small Museum Tour Runs from May 2 to Sept 14, 2009

This venue would be perfect for a touring car club or just curious people

getting to know their area.  We have lived in West Michigan for over

35 years and we have not visited any of these small museums.  I’ll bet

they hold a lot of local history, which is often fascinating.

The Tri-River Small Museum Tour starts on May 2nd, 2009 and runs until

September 14, 2009.

This tour is a network of small museums, connected by their proximity

to the Grand, Thornapple, and Flat Rivers.  There are 18 stops on

this tour and it includes a chance to win a cash prize on Sept 15, 2009.

Punch cards can be  obtained from the first museum visited.  Cash prizes of

$200, $100, and $50 will be given out for the most museums visited. In

case of a tie, there will be a drawing to determine the winners.
