Foto Friday: MSU College of Human Medicine Secchia Center Grand Rapids Michigan

We attended a recent open house for Grand Rapids Chamber of

Commerce members at the MSU College of Human Medicine in

Grand Rapids new Secchia Center.  The building and its facilities

have state of the art technology, commanding views of downtown

Grand Rapids, and a beautiful new LEED certified building.  MSU’s

College of Human Medicine is ranked in the Top 25 Medical Schools by

U.S. News and World Report, so you can see why we care excited to

have them here in the heart of Grand Rapids.

Secchia_Center_entrance

The Secchia Center, a seven-story, 180,000-square-foot building atop

a five-story parking deck along Grand Rapids’ Michigan Street, serves as the

medical education building and administrative headquarters for the MSU

College of Human Medicine.

Lobby_Atrium_MSU_SecchiaCenter

With a LEED silver certification by the U.S. Green Building Council, the

Secchia Center uses sustainable finish materials and "smart" lighting, as well

as photovoltaic glass in various areas to convert solar energy into electricity.

The building also features water reduction technologies and was designed

with a heat recovery system, radiant floor heat in the atrium and a

ventilation system that detects carbon dioxide levels in the air and auto-

matically adjusts for improved overall indoor air quality.

SecchiaCenter_Auditorium_Hall

Our second year student is giving us a tour of the auditorium.  With its

interactive live streaming system, students at the other MSU campuses can

hear the lecture and ask questions.

Lecture_Room_SecchiaCenterr

Another Lecture Room with interactive capabilities. The black boxes on

the desks act like intercoms, so each student can interact with the instructor

and his fellow students.  [Yes, that is me in the red sweater!]

Medical_Mile_GR_MI

This is the view of the Michigan Street hill from the fifth floor.

The Immanuel Lutheran School,  then Van Andel Institute, then the new

Spectrum DeVos Children’s Hospital  atop the hill.  Just part of

the Medical Mile here in Grand Rapids.

SecchiaCenter_Directory

This was my favorite item on the tour: the touch screen building directory

with Sparty, the MSU mascot helmet superimposed over a human skull.

The students have a really fantastic patient care & practice center that

is set up as a doctor’s office with treatment rooms that have a 2 way mirror

and video cameras.  Interviews and examinations can be viewed and videoed

so the student doctor can see how he is interacting with the “volunteer”

patient.  This practical experience helps to improve human interaction and

bedside manner, as well as patient treatment practice.  Volunteer patients

are from the local community and are trained on how to interact with the

students.

All of our photos of the tour are here on Flickr.

Michigan #1 in Rails to Trails Mileage

Michigan #1 in Rails to Trails Mileage

The state of Michigan leads the nation in transforming old

train rail lines to walking and biking trails.  To date we have

2478 miles of trails, with another 394 miles in progress.

This process started over 20 years ago, and many who

use the trails today, have no idea of their controversial

start. There were protests that vandals and criminals would

haunt the rural trails.  These claims seem laughable now.

bike

The Hart-Montague was Michigan’s first rail to trail conversion.

It alone draws around  50,000 to 60,000 users each year.  West

Michigan has:

  • 93-mile Fred Meijer White Pine Trail
  • Musketawa Trail from Marne to Muskegon
  • Kal-Haven Trail from Kalamazoo to South Haven
  • Kent Trails from Grand Rapids to Byron Center
  • Paul Henry-Thornapple Trail from Grand Rapids to Vermontville
  • 125-mile Fred Meijer trail complex that includes the Heartland,

Flat River Valley, Grand River Valley and CIS trails

This Brown Bear lives at the John Ball Zoological Park in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

He should be hibernating in mid-winter, which is what many of us wish we

could do on these short, cold days.  There are lots of winter activities to

lure you out of your cave this winter in the West Michigan.

Covenant-FineArts_Center

The January Series hosted by Calvin College is one of January’s

bright spots on the winter scene in Grand Rapids Michigan.  Famous

authors, public figures, sports celebrities, and many, many other speakers

are brought in every year for the public’s  education and entertainment.

The above photo was taken last Friday at the Calvin College Covenant

Fine Arts Center waiting for Ensemble Galilei to perform.  What a treat!

The January Series runs until the 25th of this month, so check out the

remaining speakers for yourself.

An added bonus to this local feature is the archives, where many

speakers from the past have been recorded, so you can browse the

list and listen anytime it is convenient.

Foto Friday – Christmas Railway Garden  Meijer Gardens 2010

Did you ever have the thrill of constructing a train set with a model village

to run your track through?  I have visited a few but never had the fun of

constructing my own.  Elves have made an awesome model railway village

in the Meijer Garden Conservatory that runs past quite a few West Michigan

landmark buildings.   The model train runs through the Victorian

Conservatory and the “Special Exhibit” Rooms.  The model Railway Garden

village is constructed of only natural materials.  It is decked out in African

Violets, orchids from the Gardens large collection, numerous ground covers,

small fir trees, tree bark, rocks and moss to give a green and magical feel

to the model railway village.

See if you can recognize the buildings before you scroll down to read

the description.

We hope you enjoyed the brief tour through the Christmas Railway Garden

Village at Meijer Gardens this year.  It will be on display until Jan. 9th, 2011.

In addition, horse drawn carriage rides, carolers, 40 theme Christmas trees,

and other holiday specials will be happening till the end of this year.

There will also be extended holiday hours on December 21, 22, 23,

27, 28, 29 and 30. The entire facility will be open until 9 pm.
