A Night at The Griffins Play Off Game

We are so fortunate to have several minor league teams here in Grand Rapids

Michigan.  We have baseball with the West Michigan Whitecaps, arena

football with the Grand Rapids Rampage, basketball with The Grand Rapids

Flight,  and last, but not least, is the Grand Rapids Ice Hockey team,

The Griffins.

The Griffins have won the IHL Joseph Turner Memorial Cup runner up in 2000

and the Fed A Huber Trophy ( regular season champion) 2001. This year they

are in the Playoffs again.  We are all rooting for our home team, and there  is

some real talent to found here. The Griffins are affiliated with the Detroit Red

Wings, not exactly unknown in the hockey arena.

Here is a few shots of the recent play-off game I attended against The

Hamilton Bulldogs. I was a guest of Arbor Mortgage, thanks guys!

Not quite sure how The Griffins took a 3-0 lead into 4-3 loss but oh, well,

that’s hockey!  Unfortunately, The Griffins didn’t win the Calder Cup Playoffs

this year.

Roselle Park at Flood Stage Ada Michigan

We took a drive along the Grand River last week and took in some

local sites.  The Grand River was a full flood stage and it changed the

scenery in a few places. This short video was taken at Roselle Park

in Ada Township Michigan.  This park is a 274 acre natural preserve

right on the banks of the Grand River.  It normally has some swampy

areas, but nothing like the scenes in the video.  Usually you have to

walk about 100 yards to get close to the river.

Since we didn’t bring our wading boots, we stayed near the entrance and

just shot our video.  We will go back and photograph the park without

water soon.

Annual Public Town Hall Meeting of Vern Ehlers ~ May 2nd 2009

Held at the Gerald R Ford Presidential Museum in downtown Grand Rapids Michigan

We attended the annual Public Town Hall Meeting that Vern Ehlers held at

Gerald R. Ford Museum on Saturday May 2nd, 2009.  We have a few video

clips of parts of the meeting and the beautiful water fountain outside of

the museum entrance.  The Grand River was at flood stage and the water

covers the sidewalk that is at the river’s edge.

This was an interesting hour spent among our peers discussing the items

we felt were important to us here in Grand Rapids.  Congressman Ehlers

gave us his thoughts and insight on many current topics.

We were disappointed to see less than 100 people out of a population of

over 660,000 that Rep. Ehlers Third District covers in Michigan.  Although

he was pleased to see that the crowd was bigger than normal.

Grand Rapids Featured on Antiques Roadshow

PBS’s popular TV show, Antiques Roadshow, will highlight  Grand Rapids

Michigan in April.  The 2 Grand Rapids shows were filmed last summer

in August 2008.

Local airings are scheduled for Monday, April 20th & April 27th, at 8 pm,

but check your local listings for more accurate information for your area.

Van Andel Museum

We are anxious to see what the Roadshow has selected for our Grand Rapids

area, though I think we will see people from all over the state and bordering

states, not just Grand Rapidians bringing their treasures in for evaluation.

Since Grand Rapids was known as "furniture city" during the second half

of the 19th century, it will be fascinating to see what is highlighted.

The big names in fine furniture: Baker, Knapp & Tubbs, Kindel, John

Widdicomb,  and Mastercraft were all based here in the city of Grand

Rapids.   Sadly, only Kindel Furniture Company still remains in our city

producing fine furniture.  The others have relocated to North Carolina

or have gone out of business.  We are now known for making office

furniture here in West Michigan.

If you are interested in the Grand Rapids furniture industry, there

is a detailed  exhibit at the Van Andel Museum that will walk you

through, from the start in the 1850’s to the furniture produced today.

Berkey & Gaye Secretary 002

This is a photo of the Berkey & Gaye Secretary circa 1865 that

we entered into the Roadshow furniture lottery.  Antique Roadshow

didn’t think our antique secretary was  rare enough to feature on

their broadcast.   I am showing it here to give you an idea of the

craftmanship that was produced  in Grand Rapids furniture factories

1850’s to the late 1980’s.
