Grand Rapids is into art in a big way. If you are familiar

with our city, you know we have murals downtown.

Cool murals thanks to ArtPrize, and forward thinking businesses

and artists. This mural was an ArtPrize 2010 entry on the Kendall

School of Design building on Division Ave at Pearl.

ArtPrize 2011 is gearing up to display 1500 works of art in our fair

city in September. Are you in?

Foto Friday – A Weed or A Flower?

Weed or Flower? As a child, Queen Anne’s Lace or Wild Carrot

was one of my favorite wild flowers. So ethereal in appearance but

tough as nails – even growing by the side of the road, with no water

or fertilizer from a gardener’s hand. Just Mother Nature spreading

her bounty to the fields and by-ways of Michigan.

As an adult, I respect the perseverance of this tough customer.

A few of these plants are allowed to mature in my gardens every year.

Because I have a soft spot for this lacy rogue and it brings back

happy childhood summertime memories.

Memories of icy, cold lemonade, burgers on the grill, and a vase

of wildflowers for the picnic table on a hot, July day. Memories

of softball games in the front yard, rides to the Tastee-Freeze

for ice cream cones after supper, and chasing fireflies and

star-gazing after darkness finally fell.

This plant has started growing in the wall of the C & O Canal in Alexandria

Virginia. A little seed gets blown into a crack, the sun shines, the rains come

and life goes on……..

A real lesson for all of us that see the grass as greener on the other side

of the fence. Would I really be happier, richer, more popular if I were in

a different place, situation, or generation?

Thoughts to ponder on a rainy June afternoon.

The difference between capital [a city that serves as a seat of

government] and capitol [a building that houses a legislature] is

one little letter. This photo of our nation’s Capitol building in our

nation’s capital city, Washington DC was taken from the roof of

the NAR headquarters on New Jersey Avenue.

Grand Rapids. The walkway on the right runs along the river for blocks.

Ab Nab Wen Park is to the left behind the trees lining the riverfront, where

you can see original Native American mounds that were left by the earliest

human settlers to the river valley.

Foto Friday: M-21 Bridge Demolition in Progress Ada Michigan

Living in Ada Michigan, we cross the Grand River on the M-21 Bridge

quite often, four times today. The new temporary bridge is up and the

old bridge is being demolished.

Heavy construction vehicles, broken concrete, and lots of high water

make for a muddy work site. This submerged dock is at the DNR fishing

site on the Grand River just north of the bridge, adjacent to the Amway

parking lot.

Last year we took a vacation on the St Johns River in central Florida. What a

peaceful place. This photo was taken at a fishing dock around 5 pm. The herons

were checking to see if there was any fish leavings they could help clean up.

This Brown Bear lives at the John Ball Zoological Park in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

He should be hibernating in mid-winter, which is what many of us wish we

could do on these short, cold days. There are lots of winter activities to

lure you out of your cave this winter in the West Michigan.
