What IF a Grand Rapids Disaster Strikes? Why C.E.R.T. Training Makes Sense

What IF a Grand Rapids Disaster Strikes?  Why C.E.R.T. Training Makes Sense

We see natural and man–made disasters happen on the news:

tornadoes, floods, hurricanes, earthquakes, tsunamis, chemical spills,

oil spills, & fires.  We always think: How terrible!  What would we do if

this happened to us and our loved ones?  It can, in a heartbeat.

Grand River

Would you be prepared if a policeman knocked on your door and

said  you had to evacuate NOW – no time to gather a few things, no

time to get essentials, leave right now or your life would be in imminent

danger?

That is one of the scenarios we were faced with on our first night

of Community Emergency Response Team training.  We were encouraged

to pack a “GO BAG” with necessary items, like a toothbrush, set of

clothes, a CD or zip file with our insurance information and important

financial account information, in case we couldn’t return home for an

extended time.

Just weeks ago, this seemed like a far-fetched, worst case fantasy.

Now, with the tragic news of Japan’s earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear

reactor meltdowns, it doesn’t seem so unlikely.

firetruck_Terry

In our C.E.R.T. classes, we are learning how to be a citizen emergency

response team.  Basic safety, hazardous materials, medical emergency

response, basic search and rescue lessons are taught by a C.E.R.T.

instructor through the Homeland Security Agency and in

partnership with the Grand Rapids Fire Department.  We are learning a

lot about emergency response and disasters we might be asked to

assist on if we join the local team.  Even if we just use this information

for ourselves, our family, and our neighbors it will be worthwhile.

me and dummy

The local C.E.R.T. instructors are trying to build a local C.E.R.T. Team

for the Grand Rapids area.  Did you know we have a population of about

1.5 million in the Greater Grand Rapids area?  Did you also know that

we have about 10,000 policemen, firemen, and EMT’s to respond

to an epic disaster?   Hmmm…

Grand Rapids Michigan Sunday Open Houses 3-13-2011 (1)

Grand Rapids Michigan Sunday Open Houses 3-13-2011

Sunday Open Houses are a great way to preview homes and take

a look at what is available for what price in a local area.  The times

are usually 2 hours in length, sometimes longer, which gives you lots

of leeway if you want to see a few homes you weren’t planning on

visiting on the way.

Grand Rapids home

Open Houses are an excellent way to see if buying a different home

is feasible or if you would be better off staying where you are.  Price and

amenities in any local area should let you know if you are in the ball park

or not.  If that killer bedroom suite you have been wishing for is only showing

up in homes way out of your price range, then it just isn’t an option.  Time to

go home and give the master bedroom a new coat of paint, organize the

closet and let that dream go for now.

There are 48 Open Houses in Grand Rapids this coming Sunday:

Foto Friday: MSU College of Human Medicine Secchia Center Grand Rapids Michigan

We attended a recent open house for Grand Rapids Chamber of

Commerce members at the MSU College of Human Medicine in

Grand Rapids new Secchia Center.  The building and its facilities

have state of the art technology, commanding views of downtown

Grand Rapids, and a beautiful new LEED certified building.  MSU’s

College of Human Medicine is ranked in the Top 25 Medical Schools by

U.S. News and World Report, so you can see why we care excited to

have them here in the heart of Grand Rapids.

Secchia_Center_entrance

The Secchia Center, a seven-story, 180,000-square-foot building atop

a five-story parking deck along Grand Rapids’ Michigan Street, serves as the

medical education building and administrative headquarters for the MSU

College of Human Medicine.

Lobby_Atrium_MSU_SecchiaCenter

With a LEED silver certification by the U.S. Green Building Council, the

Secchia Center uses sustainable finish materials and "smart" lighting, as well

as photovoltaic glass in various areas to convert solar energy into electricity.

The building also features water reduction technologies and was designed

with a heat recovery system, radiant floor heat in the atrium and a

ventilation system that detects carbon dioxide levels in the air and auto-

matically adjusts for improved overall indoor air quality.

SecchiaCenter_Auditorium_Hall

Our second year student is giving us a tour of the auditorium.  With its

interactive live streaming system, students at the other MSU campuses can

hear the lecture and ask questions.

Lecture_Room_SecchiaCenterr

Another Lecture Room with interactive capabilities. The black boxes on

the desks act like intercoms, so each student can interact with the instructor

and his fellow students.  [Yes, that is me in the red sweater!]

This is the view of the Michigan Street hill from the fifth floor.

The Immanuel Lutheran School,  then Van Andel Institute, then the new

Spectrum DeVos Children’s Hospital  atop the hill.  Just part of

the Medical Mile here in Grand Rapids.

SecchiaCenter_Directory

This was my favorite item on the tour: the touch screen building directory

with Sparty, the MSU mascot helmet superimposed over a human skull.

The students have a really fantastic patient care & practice center that

is set up as a doctor’s office with treatment rooms that have a 2 way mirror

and video cameras.  Interviews and examinations can be viewed and videoed

so the student doctor can see how he is interacting with the “volunteer”

patient.  This practical experience helps to improve human interaction and

bedside manner, as well as patient treatment practice.  Volunteer patients

are from the local community and are trained on how to interact with the

students.

All of our photos of the tour are here on Flickr.
